The Collective

The Independent Label Collective took shape in early 2009. We are a group of independent record labels, musicians and individuals who work together to create a one of a kind DIY distribution system. Since the inception of the ILC, we have worked hard to provide worldwide physical and digital distribution for our label roster and their artists from around the world. In early 2010 we have plans to extend our services to merchandising, mechanical licensing, and PR and our primary goal is to provide everyone involved with some of the best services possible.

ILC is exactly what our name states; a group of independent labels taking matters into their own hands.

Asian Man Records

ASIAN MAN is a VERY SMALL LABEL!!!! I think some of the general public have the wrong idea and believe we’re this huge record company with tons of employees, but we’ve only got one phone line (with no call waiting), a fax machine, and just recently purchased a second computer. Depending on how you look at things, this is either a good thing or a bad thing. For me, it’s the only thing (or in other words: “I LIKE BEING A LITTLE LABEL”) This is how the label will remain. I do this for the love of music, not for capitalist gain or status recognition. I only work with bands that are ANTI-RACIST, ANTI-SEXIST, ANTI-PREJUDICE, and who support the ideas of peace and unity. And yes,  the label is still run out of my parents garage in San Jose, California.
Peace, mike park

Cavity Records

Cavity Records is a small label founded by two friends in Toledo, Ohio.  After working in the music distribution business for a few years, these guys decided to give it a shot and start their own label.  They started by releasing the 2xLP of “Nord” by France’s own Year Of No Light.  After this they put out albums by bands such as Giants, NORTH, Nanda Devi, Sakes Alive!!, Eagle Scout, Mooncake and Syrens.  While most labels stick to a primary genre of the music they are releasing, Cavity embraces all kinds of different jams, from post-rock to punk to metal to doom, if it is good and we like it then there are no boundaries. Now located in the lovely Richmond, Virginia,  our primary focus is to consistently put out great quality records that we love and believe in so we can share them with all fellow music lovers like ourselves.

Chunksaah Records

Chunksaah Records is the brainchild of The Bouncing Souls, who rather than give up on their dream decided on the “d.i.y.” approach to the record industry. It quickly became a family affair; symbolically named in 1993 after its benefactor Timmy Chunks (notorious for his Queens-aah accentahh). They knew the name was one that would leave a lasting impression, as well as represent the ties that started and have kept the label together.

This d.i.y. approach to the record industry has been everything but glamorous. It involved learning and growing as a family in a familiar and ever changing scene. Chunksaah Records has grown as a family remaining true to the original idea; a label free of industry jargon, lawyer-speak and pigeon-holing, but full of people who are willing to risk it all, work hard, and at the same time be treated equally, like family.

Chunksaah Records: simple folk trying to bring good music to good people in a tumultuous world.

Corrosive Recordings

Corrosive Recordings was started back in 2001 by myself. It was not meant to be a label. The name was created specifically to release the “Nasty Habits Live On WERS” CD. A compilation of all live in studio tracks recorded at WERS Boston over the years I hosted the Metal/Hardcore radio show. I booked bands to play live all the time, never thinking they would become as popular as they are today. Aggressive music was not getting the kind of exposure in early 2000 as it is now. At the time I was working part time at Hydra Head Records and lucky for me had help from those guys and was able to put out a nice looking and sounding compilation with some of todays most popular Metal/Hardcore bands. (Unearth, Poison The Well, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cephalic Carnage, etc.) In August 2004 I decided to start things up again. My goal is to help new up and coming bands develop themselves and get their name out there.

Frontier Records

Frontier Records was founded in 1980 in Sun Valley, CA and was one of the first independent labels to document the nascent hard-core punk rock scene of OC and LA (Circle Jerks, Adolescents, TSOL, Suicidal Tendencies) before branching out into other scenes and sounds such as the so-called “Paisley Underground” (Three O’Clock, Long Ryders), alt.guitar bands (Thin White Rope, AMC, Young Fresh Fellows)
before lording over the vintage punk (Weirdos, Dangerhouse label, Middle Class) compilation market. The importance of the Frontier catalogue cannot be overstated in terms of musical worth or sure-fire catalogue sales as its 30-year history proves so admirably.

Jailhouse! Records

Jailhouse Records was established in 2004 by Dave Johnson, who started the label originally as a one off project to put out a compilation release for a local charity. He worked through the nineties, and 2000′s running various distro’s. publishing an underground zine called “Channels Of Bureaucracy” as well as writing for various other punk zine’s, and becoming entrenched in the subculture of independent media. The name comes from  a past filled with personal demons, and a  lifestyle of drugs, times on the street and behind bars. The label as of 2010, has produced twenty four releases, ranging from local Virginia bands, such as “The Unabomber’s” to legendary old school bands such as “Pink Lincolns, The New Threat, Moral Crux, Teenage Rehab, The F-Bombers and many more, and has worked projects along side bands as “The Queers, The Unseen, and  Electric Frankenstein among others. The future sees Jailhouse Records working to adapt to the ever changing music industry, employing  new P.R, and publicity companies and agencies. Continuing the labels tradition of charitable support, they have recently began to work closely with the non profit organization Built On Respect, which aids founder Heidi Minx, in working towards the betterment of Tibetan refugees.

New Red Archives

We started out in 1987 putting out punk and hardcore records on colored vinyl. You won’t see us on MTV and radio doesn’t play our stuff often, but word of mouth has kept us going. Luddites we’re not, you’ll find our releases on CD and mp3 If mainstream punk is your thing, then this label isn’t for you, but if you like your music undiluted check us out.

Red Scare Industries

Red Scare Industries is a San Francisco punk rock imprint based out of Tobias Jeg’s 2-bedroom apartment.  His roommate isn’t too thrilled about the boxes in the living room or the bands that stay over, but he’s just gonna have to deal because things are going well and more bands are showing interest in working with Red Scare.  The label was first conceived when good buddy Brendan Kelly was working on his project, The Falcon, and wanted an unknown label to release their debut EP.  Thus it was hatched: Red Scare 101.  Shortly after, Toby pleaded with Enemy You and begged to release their next record (Red Scare 102!), discovered Teenage Bottlerocket (yep, Red Scare 103), re-issued some classic records from the Lillingtons…next thing ya know we got a punk rock empire on our hands!  Well sorta.  Red Scare plans to keep working with quality bands that devote more time to writing great songs than they do working on their image.  That seems to be a problem with today’s punk scene, but we hope that quality bands will prevail in the end.  The label has since relocated to Chicago and has since added notable bands such as Cobra Skulls, Sundowner, Methadones, Copyrights, and a dozen others to their ranks.

Riot Fest Records

Stemming from the annual festival in Chicago, Riot Fest Records made its first appearance in 2007 with a DVD/CD set from the reunited punk legends Naked Raygun.  The label itself is run by Riot Fest partners Michael Petryshyn and Sean McKeough, who have worked with bands such as Naked Raygun, Pegboy, ALL, and Shot Baker.  Since its formation, the label’s catalog has been progressively growing and expanding, with exciting plans for new releases from a diverse range of bands who have played the Riot Fest stage.

Rodent Popsicle Records

Rodent Popsicle Records is a Boston-based DIY punk and hardcore record label established in 1992! Originally the label was only formed to release a couple of records for Boston area bands including our own. We never expected at that point to grow into the label we are today, so the choice of a name was never taken seriously, but it stuck. Eventually we began releasing other friends’ bands on the label and soon enough it was a full-time endeavor.

Right around the year 2000, we began releasing bands from all around the world and we decided to take the label more seriously than ever before! At that point, all of our releases were done as professionally as any other label and we released our first 12” LP and DVD on the label. Though our focus was DIY punk and hardcore, we did not want to limit ourselves to releasing music of that genre only. We have released a wide variety of different bands and most of the bands are friends of ours long before we put something out for them. Most of the bands we release are hardworking and constantly touring, but musically span all the genres of punk rock. In our opinion, the true ethic of punk was not to look and sound the same, so we continue release music that we like regardless of what other people might think.

Second Nature Recordings

Second Nature Recordings was founded in 1995 somewhat unintentionally while putting together the A Document of Nothing compilation as a companion disc for Second Nature Zine, when an opportunity arose to release an EP by Coalesce. Rooted in Kansas City and focusing on many bands from the thriving Kansas City music scene such as Coalesce, The Casket Lottery, In The Pines, Kill Creek, Reggie in the Full Effect, Old Canes, Vedera, The Belles, The Higher Burning Fire, Elevator Division and Ad Astra Per Aspera, relationships were quickly made with other artists while traveling with Coalesce and Second Nature would see releases over the years from Isis, Grade, Sharks Keep Moving, Waxwing, These Arms Are Snakes, Kid Kilowatt, Rocky Votolato, ILYA, The Blood Brothers, Krakatoa, Eulcid, Anasarca, Small Brown Bike, Able Baker Fox, Ox, Blusom, Jaguar Love and more. A decade and a half later, the simple notion of releasing music for friends remains the driving force of the label.

Silver Sprocket Bicycle Club/Springman Records

The Silver Sprocket Bicycle Club grew from the Ashes of Springman Records, the label run out of founder Avi Ehrlich’s bedroom since 1997. Now run from his San Francisco apartment, the old “Friendly Punks” slogan still applies as this merry band of freaks make friends, art, and drives social change throughout their communities.

More of a “cult” than a “business,” these kids miraculously manage to consistently release an eclectic array of quality punk and indie related records along with clothing, toys and random bad ideas, in the comfort of their matching members-only bicycle club jackets.

Six Weeks Records

Athena Kautsch and Jeff Robinson started Six Weeks in 1992 after a six-week tour of the states by their bands, Capitalist Casualties and The Dread. Inspired by the dedication of individuals met on this tour, they returned home to write a tour zine entitled Six Weeks, full of interviews with bands met along the way and recounts of the adventure of being a punk band on the road.

With good results, a second issue was released, with more interviews and recounts of following tours done by both bands. This second issue also came with a 90-minute compilation tape. Athena had always put out The Dread’s records on her own and with her experience they funded the first release on Six Weeks Records in 1993, the Capitalist Casualties/The Dread split EP.

The label was formed with the intention of releasing records by unknown and unappreciated punk bands worldwide, by releasing and distributing international hardcore/punk and grind, and becoming one of the few US labels to release bands from Japan, Europe and South America at the time (as well as their friends’ bands back home).

To this day, Six Weeks is still dedicated to the ideals of hardcore/punk in all of its many genres and varieties, still diligently distributes international punk records at shows and through mail-order, and still continues to release the best non-commercial hardcore/punk/grind from around the globe and has also taken over publication of Short, Fast & Loud fanzine, a magazine dedicated to exposing the most extreme noise the underground music scene has to offer.

Sympathy For The Record Industry

“We Almost Really Care”, “Audio Salvation for Off-centered Souls”, “21 Years of Performance Anxiety, Instability and Poor Judgment”, “West Coast Perpetrators of the Finest in Musical Mayhem”, “A Name You Can Pronounce Since 1988″, “Is a Force This Powerful Going to be Overlooked by an Industry That Needs All the Sympathy It Can Get ??”, “You’ve Tried the Rest, Now Go Fuck Yourself”… Sympathy is big on mottos…Mottos flash incessantly in my sleep like neon lights… “Fractured Folk, Hard-core Jazz, Hybrid Blues, Gratuitous Pop, Punk Rock and Uneasy Listening”

It’s true and Sympathy has never been pigeon-hole-able…Too diverse maybe for it’s own good, but I never could be as narrow-minded as I feel many labels are…Sympathy has always been a one-man operation and I make all the decisions so blame me if I often get it wrong… The Sympathy catalogue consists of over 750 releases by more than 550 artists…

Known for a multitude of things including releasing early efforts by Hole, The White Stripes, Turbonegro, Rocket from the Crypt and The 5,6,7,8′s as well as resurrecting the classic music of immortals such as Roky Erickson, New York Dolls, Suicide, The Gun Club, Spacemen 3, The Scientists and Wanda Jackson and lets not forget the serious concentration on a plethora (like that word??) of bands in hot beds such as Memphis, Detroit and Montreal and also being among the first to look towards the Far East to unleash the demented and curious off-kilter sounds of those crazed ornamentals (Asians to you of a p.c. mindset)…

Sympathy is also responsible for releasing records by untold bands of differing degrees of talent with really questionable names like The Pleasure Fuckers, Banana Erectors, Anal Babes, Candypants, Teenage Larvae, Tri-State Kill Spree, Iowa Beef Experience, The Child Molesters, Penetration Moon, Smegma, Ethyl Meatplow, The Spaceshits and Destroy All Monsters…
So what?? Big deal you say, well, Sympathy has also worked with underrated and seemingly unsung heroes like Billy Childish, The Oblivians, Holly Golightly la la la etc and are hailed for recognizing and employing  important visual artists to create wondrous covers featuring such heavyweights as Mark Ryden, Camille Rose Garcia, Yoshitoma Nara, Liz Mcgrath, Coop, The Pizz, Dan Clowes blah blah blah la la la etc ad infinitum…

Sympathy has been quiet for the last couple years after the move to Olympia, Washington, but that is all about to change…Sympathy will soon begin repressing loads of important vinyl as well as unleashing new music lacking any introspection or melody by disenfranchised half-assed rock n’ rollers…STAY TUNED…   Like that, Long Gone John xx

The Mylene Sheath

The Mylene Sheath is an independent record label. Our motivation behind this is to make the art we love available to as many people as we can. We are not interested in creating a product to be bought and sold for as much money as it can produce. It’s our effort to actively participate in something meaningful, to give back to something that has always filled the voids in our lives and helped us maintain a positive outlook on the future.

Tribunal Records

Tribunal Records, now in it’s 10th year of operation, has proven itself to have been a great starting point for so many new bands in the early stages of their careers. Having introduced the music community to artists such as Atreyu, From Autumn To Ashes, He Is Legend, Scarlet, Daylight Dies, Animosity and Killwhitneydead has only helped to solidify Tribunal Records’ reputation for releasing some of the best music in the scene today. Unlike in it’s formative years, Tribunal Records’ roster has matured and includes the multiple facets of all that rock, metal and hardcore have to offer and now includes it’s specialty reissue division, Divebomb Records. Tribunal Records’ motto is simple…”believe in the brand.”

Firestarter Records/Toxic Pop Records

Firestarter Records started in the Fall of 2002, then known as Go Home Records, with the release of the split 7″ from Baltimore’s Looks Like Rain and Northern Virginia’s The Infamous, which was co-released by Grave Mistake Records, then known as Sick of Talk Records. We focused on fast hardcore/punk bands from the MD/DC/VA area for a few years until releasing 7″s for The Breaks and Formaldehyde Junkies, both from the Midwest. To this day, our focus remains on releasing great hardcore/punk bands from all over the world that truly excite us, from traditional bands like Formaldehyde Junkies, Psyched To Die, and The Spark, to heavier bands like Pulling Teeth, Ruiner, and Nux Vomica.

Toxic Pop Records was formed as a sister label to Firestarter for all of our other musical interests from pop-punk and indie-rock to alt-country and post-hardcore. The mindset, the ethics, and the system of operation are exactly the same: release music we love by people we respect and do everything in our power to get the music heard by people who will be as excited by it as we are.

Grave Mistake Records

Grave Mistake Records, started in 2002, is an independent hardcore and punk record label based in Richmond, VA.  The label focuses primarily on hardcore bands operating out of the Mid-Atlantic scene (MD / VA / DC) although does not limit itself geographically.  GRAVE MISTAKE has become synonymous with fast traditional hardcore punk (86 Mentality, Government Warning, Wasted Time), although it’s back catalog reflects a broader spectrum of the “hardcore” genre, ranging from more “modern” hardcore (Down To Nothing, Ruiner) to straightforward punk rock (Cloak/Dagger, The Ladies).

Jump Start Records

We’re a record label, duh. More specifically, we’re an independent record label that for the most part has released punk, hardcore, ska, and reggae records.

We’re not a huge label, and more than likely, will never be, and that’s just fine with us. We can’t make your band “huge”, and we’re not going to help your band do things like “tour” if you’re already not out on the road “livin’ the dream”. We release records, that’s just about it. We do as much as we can with what we’ve got, but that isn’t much, so if you’re looking to be the next big thing, you stopped by the wrong place. We don’t care if we sell 100 or 100,000 copies of a record (although we’d like the latter more than the former). If kids like it, cool. If not, We don’t care because we do… that’s why we put out records by friends and by bands we like.

Jump Start Records Website

Little Black Cloud Records

Little Black Cloud Records is three points of right: three friends from three states (NJ/WA/VA) dedicated to releasing records that we find so impactful that they will hopefully remind people why they started collecting records in the first place. It is our goal to bring awe-inspiring records to life so even the most disenchanted music fan will have something to smile about. All genres of music are welcome here so our future releases could include experimental black metal just as easily as it could welcome a twee release.

Panic Records

Panic Records was formed in the fall of 2005 by Trial guitarist Timm McIntosh. Starting out as most labels do, Timm’s intention was to release long out of print Trial recordings. When asked to release his friends band Barricade it took off from there and Panic Records continued to release records from friends’ bands.

With years of time spent in bands (Trial, Champion, Wait In Vain) and working with label dealings for his own bands, Timm has taken the knowledge he has learned and applied it to Panic Records. Panic is ambitious and ever expanding, moving forward to reach any and every audience interested in what the label has to offer. While predominately a Hardcore/Punk label, Panic Records will not restricted to just that genre of music, with plans to release anything that is appealing to the ears of Timm McIntosh and company, Panic Records will become quite an eclectic label.

Panic Records has released an assortment of incredible bands, Set Your Goals, Make Do And Mend, Lions Lions, Another Breath, Trial, The Golden Age, Final Fight and Outrage to name a few.

Alex DiMattesa

I’ve been obsessed with music ever since I can remember (my earliest memories are listing to 45′s of Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take it” and Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” theme song all day long)… and I’ve doing bands since I first picked up a guitar. In the past decade the bands I’ve played in, filled in for, toured with, etc includes – Government Warning, Wasted Time, Set To Explode, Worn Thin, Down To Nothing, Pulling Teeth, Desperate Measures, Crispus Attucks, and maybe even a few more… in 2002 I took a chance at putting out records of my own and started Grave Mistake Records which is still going strong. With Grave Mistake, I’ve released almost 40 releases, mostly VA / DC / MD area hardcore and punk bands (but bands from outside the area as well) and have built up quite the online mailorder/distro biz to go along with the label. I love everything involved with music, from creating it and playing it, releasing it, buying it, selling it, sending it, receiving it, even putting it on shelves and packing it up into boxes! So, needless to say, being a part of the ILC is sort of like my dream job… music stuff aside, I live off of a steady diet of Chipotle, assorted vegan treats, Mad Men, Entourage, my favorite movies on constant rotation (Wall Street, LOTR, Star Wars, Bourne Trilogy, Oceans Trilogy, to name a few)… I also love to read but it is rare because punk rock has unfortunately destroyed what little attention span I had to begin with.

Andy King

Andy King began his excursion in the music industry in 1999. After a stint as frontman for Philadelphia hardcore/punk/oi band, Two Minutes Hate, he began utilizing the writing skills he honed studying for his BA in English Literature by freelance writing for music magazines such as Rockpile and Chord. His hunger to be more formally involved in the music world as a profession led him to a position at the metal label Relapse Records, where he eventually ran the wholesale and mailorder departments for several years. During that time, he also founded Thorp Records, a largely hardcore/metal label, that now boasts over 80 releases including bands such as Blood For Blood, Madball, Drowningman, Ramallah, Slapshot, The Ducky Boys, and more. In 2002, he moved to Toledo, Ohio to begin working as a sales rep for Lumberjack Distribution where he remained for three years. In early 2005 he parted ways with Lumberjack in order to run Thorp Records full time, as well as his newly founded imprint, Sailor’s Grave Records, which focuses largely on street punk, Oi, psychobilly, and rock n roll. After some detours into non-music-related professions, he is now actively assisting ILC in their zealous pursuit of all things indie and running both of his labels, amongst managing the three products of his nuptial pro-creation activities. In his free time, he enjoys vigorous weight lifting, smoking fine cigars, getting tattooed, reading geo-political spy novels, hanging with his wife and kids, and a couple fingers of bourbon now and then.

I started up an independent record label in 2005 called Headcount Records, releasing bands from hardcore to punk to surf… no definite genre just releasing stuff we are really into. I have been going to shows since 2001, I have done 3 bands and gone on tour many times with other bands including a Warped Tour in 2004 and a European Tour in 2009 with Seasick. Dan Phillips

My experience in the music industry started about 6 years ago working at a record store in Toledo, Ohio called Allied Record Exchange.  I played in a few different local bands that never really did much touring or recording.  After that I worked at Lumberjack Distro for 4+ years doing everything from Warehouse Management, Digital Maintenance, Sales and Inventory Management. I also run my own label, Cavity Records with ILC’s Jason White. We’ve put out records from bands like North, Giants, Year Of No Light, Sakes Alive, Nanda Devi and more.  I have a 6 year old boxer/pitbull named Sabbra that I bring to work with me everyday. I’m still in school (kinda) working on my bachelor’s degree, but probably won’t ever do anything with it. One of these days I’m going to get around to making a record instead of just selling them. Besides all that, I like reading, running, walking my dog, video games, horror movies, mountain biking, riding my really old motorcycle and the Chicago Bears.

Why am I here? Well, music seems to be a pretty key part of my life (so far at least), I don’t really know how to do anything else. Since high school I have worked with music in some way; three plus years at a record store, four years at Lumberjack Mordam, two years with Robotic Empire and almost two years helping run my own label, Cavity Records. I could tell you more, but I am not going to.

I have worked in and around the music industry for more years than I’d like to count.  I have been a fanzine-turned-webzine writer, proper music journalist, buyer/manager at an indie record store, publicist (for labels including Hydra Head, Deathwish, Ferret, etc.), label manager for Blood & Ink Records, designer/web developer for a gazillion labels, played in a few bands, and now am super excited to be part of the ILC team.

Yikes, I hate writing this crap!  Music stuff I’ve done: played in local bands, Ladyfest DC, leader of a rock & roll after school program for kids in Richmond, counselor at Girls Rock! camp in DC, freelance music writer, Cherry Bomb (all-lady DJ collective), about to put out my first record, and now stoked to be here at the ILC! When I’m not at work, I’m getting my Masters in Social Work, running, playing with my 2 hound dogs, or planning community events.
